A Promised Land by Barack Obama

5.0

listen, we all knew Barack Obama’s book was going to be well-written. i’ve read some of the accounts in this in other books but getting President Obama’s take was still enriching. most of the major current events in this book took place when I was a child/teenager so I appreciated being able to revisit them now when I have a different perspective of the world.

as expected, the book is far from objective. while I think President Obama is honest in his assessments, there were definitely portions that glossed over events. but it’s a memoir, a man evaluating his own legacy. it’s not a textbook and I’d encourage anyone who reads it to remember that it’s not absolute truth.

a slight detour to get on my soapbox. if you take one thing away from this book it should be that we should not idolize politicians. yes, they have power and yes, as public servants they should be held accountable for how they wield that power. but as he discusses in the book, change is larger than one individual person, even an immensely popular one, and it’s more important to put our faith in the ideals we fight for.

anyways, I laughed and cried and felt swells of hope while reading this and would definitely recommend.
