The Myth of Persecution: How Early Christians Invented a Story of Martyrdom by Candida Moss
4.0
The Myth of Persecution by Candida Moss--Exhaustively researched and surprisingly nuanced, this book explores the history of persecution in the early church. Moss visits the early Christian church as it begins to develop its own mythology, from beleaguered saints to the glorification of martyrs. Artificial martyrdom and the exaggeration of persecution certainly have parallels to the modern day, and Moss makes the argument that the American church's obsession with Christianity being persecuted ends up drawing well-deserved attention from actual atrocities globally. Thumbs up.
