The Executioner by Chris Carter
4.0
Detective Robert Hunter #2 sees Hunter and Garcia assigned a gruesome murder of a priest, with all the hallmarks of a ritual murder. That is until it links to an equally gruesome murder, with a completely different MO.
I always worry about the second book in a series, will it be as good as the debut? Will it feel too samey? Will the characters continue to grow and develop? With The Executioner I needn't have worried. Just as exciting and grisly as The Crucifix Killer, and with just as many twists and turns and feints. I would like to delve a little deeper into the characters, maybe get a few more well defined females (who don't die by the end of the book). But for the second in a series, matching the intensity and excitement is a very important goal. I liked the hints of parapsychology, the clear explanations of criminology. Minus one star for the minor instances of casual homophobia though, yeah these are tough guys, no they don't need to be like that.
Next up from Carter is The Night Stalker.
