My Absolute Darling
by Gabriel Tallent
Disturbing (but in a good way?).
Overall a good character analysis. I read a lot of reviews that talked about how it didn’t seem “realistic”, but I wasn’t aware there was some standard that the mind of an abused 14 year old that this book was violating. I think it accurately portrays and explains what someone exposed to that situation would react, some events and parts of dialogue were a little unbelievable but they were few and far in between.
There are also the reviews that talk about it being written by a privileged male author who has no authority in what an abused fourteen year old girl would think. There were a lot of “bitch” and “cunts” sprinkled gratuitously throughout so maybe that’s what would draw them to that conclusion? It’s FICTION not an AUTOBIOGRAPHY. I’d say if ‘you fucking bitch cunt stupid slut’ offends you, then to stay away because the language is probably the least of your worries with this book.
Overall I really liked the book, it was interesting, absorbing and will stay with me for a while but I was a little too uncomfortable to rate it a 4.
