The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson left me absolutely blown away by some of the plot twists. As the second book in the Truly Devious series, it took the mystery to new heights, weaving together past and present in a way that kept me hooked from beginning to end.
What I loved most about this book was how it deepened the mystery of Ellingham Academy. Just when I thought I was starting to piece things together, Johnson threw in twists that completely upended my theories. The way she balances the suspense with character development is truly masterful. Stevie Bell, in particular, continues to shine as a protagonist. Her determination and cleverness make her one of my favorite detectives in YA fiction.
The pacing in The Vanishing Stair is spot-on, with each chapter revealing just enough to keep the tension high while still leaving plenty of questions unanswered. The twists were not only surprising but also perfectly timed, keeping me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t stop reading because I had to know what was going to happen next.
The setting of Ellingham Academy remains as atmospheric and eerie as ever, adding to the overall suspense. Johnson’s ability to create such a vivid and mysterious environment made the book even more immersive.
The Vanishing Stair is a fantastic sequel that raises the stakes and delivers on the promise of the first book. If you’re a fan of mysteries with clever twists and strong characters, this book will not disappoint. It’s a must-read that will leave you eagerly reaching for the next installment
