This was really good! I'm often a bit meh about settings that feel quite usual-fantasy fare, but this leaned just hard enough into the details of its setting (and used just enough obscure or archaic words; I'm easy for interesting verbiage) that it pulled me in. The real juice was in the special physics and supernatural layer on the setting, which was downright fascinating. The churn of strength and weakness, fear and desire between humans and gods really drove this story - and these characters - and did what all good speculative elements should: offer a thematic and allegorical layer for the intricacies of being human. The mesh of viewpoints draws tighter into a very satisfying little knot of a plot, that really digs into the characters and leaves them poised for some big damn story to come. Which I am looking forward to getting into!
