The Magicians' Guild by Trudi Canavan

4.0

I once read a post somewhere that said something along the lines of "fantasy names are just regular names said by authors with a mouthful of biscuit" and every time a new name appeared in this book, that was all I could think.

Sonea - Sonia
Dannyl - Daniel
Lorlen - Lauren

You get the idea. It didn't detract from the story but I did find myself trying to say the names out loud to see which name it might sound like.

It took me a long time to make it through this book but I don't feel it was a fault of the book itself. For some reason this was the book I chose in the middle of a reading slump and it's just been a bit hard to prioritise time to sit and read it.

I loved the story. It is a different twist on the normal "rags to riches" that we normally see, and I found myself really liking the characters. Even characters that weren't particularly prevalent in the book were relatable and likable. The main character, Sonea, has a lot of inner turmoil and the author manages to maintain this throughout without it becoming frustrating or tiresome.

Very enjoyable read, although a bit of a slow start which is why it loses a star. There's also a lot of politics and background that can drag on if you're just looking for a story to dive in to and get lost in.
