Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

5.0

A beautifully enchanting and well crafted story. 3 strong female leads. Cannot recommend this book enough. It says it's based off of Rumplestiltskin, and while that may have some elements, it's really nothing more than a VERY BRIEF NOD to that fairy tale. This is honestly a fairy tale in and of itself. 3 of them truthfully. There is so much in this book, culture, socio systems, touches of racism, touches of finding strength despite abuse. Maybe my favorite thing about this story is there was no forced love story. None of our heroines meet a fairy tale prince and immediately fall in love (And for those who may ask, no spice. Absolutely none. And I feel if any had been added it would've cheapened the story.) That was beautifully refreshing. The magic in the book is also not overly complex but it is still rich and feels real for the story. It has such strong Jewish and Slavic tones woven into it. Overall, you need to read this book if you like fantasy and stories of finding family and strength.
