Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

3.5

2022 review:
4/5
I’d been wanting to read this book for such a long time, but I actually thought that it wasn’t published yet. When I went to check the publication date, I found that it was already published and I jumped at the chance to pick up a copy. I’d heard lots of good things about this book, and I remembered vaguely hearing something about it involving some sort of LGBT content, but at first I thought it was just fans shipping two characters together. I didn’t want to look too much into the book as I hate spoilers and wanted to have as fresh of an experience with this book as possible!
I love the atmosphere and feeling of this book. I love the thought of magic schools or supernatural schools, just like I find the world of Harry Potter and Hogwarts so appealing and atmospheric.
When reading Carry On, I could definitely see lots of links to Harry Potter, and a lot of inspiration that Rainbow Rowell must have taken from Harry Potter.
I loved the story, and the twists and turns that came with it. I loved the relationship between Simon and Baz- relationships that start with a dislike then slowly melt into something more romantic are my favourite type of relationships!
I do feel as though the relationship between Baz and Simon did flower really fast. For Simon to switch from being so invested in Agatha to suddenly being head over heels for Baz felt a little unrealistic. But it was still cute as heck and I’m so glad for this representation in such an awesome story!
I cannot wait until Wayward Son is published so that I can get my hungry hands on that one too! Rainbow Rowell did a really good job with this one and I’m definitely going to be checking out more of her other books!

2024 review:
3.5/5
I read this book for the first time back in 2022 and remember loving it loads. This time around, I have to admit that the magic wasn’t as strong. It was still a great book and I enjoyed it, but I think I’ll never get that same feeling as I did when I first read the book.
I love the character development and the enemies-to-lovers relationship between Simon and Baz.
I love how this book is so clearly inspired by Harry Potter, but it still manages to stay original and individual in its own way.
I’m looking forward to rereading the second novel as well, and eventually reading the third and final book in the series (which I’ve never read!)
