Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

I wish this was a YA novel, but it's not. There's swearing and sex scenes.
The writing quality was solid. Nothing spectacular, but overall good. I did skim a bit. The Gauntlet part was a little long, as was the final battle. The author mostly does a good job of showing time passing but sometimes she skips over things I'd have liked to hear about. (Like magic lessons and Violet competing in the challenge battles without cheating.) It was quite predictable. I guessed every twist and turn before it happened.
The world building and magic are some of the best parts of the book! As many other reviews have pointed out, it's not unique, but that doesn't mean it's not good.
I was afraid by the summary that it would be too dark, but it's surprisingly not. Yes, there are plenty of deaths, but most happen to a character we met only a page before they died. There was one death that I hated!
I liked all of the characters, even the ones I hated. My favorites were the dragons, and Violet’s friends Liam and Rhiannon. I started out liking Dain. He had a cute joking, almost flirting friendship with Violet. Unfortunately, it wasn't too long before he became annoying, overly protective, and too much of a rule follower.
Representation: Violet has connective tissue disorder, which was well done, (But that's not a surprise, since the author has it too.) And I'm glad that she wasn't magically fixed. Violet's friend Rhiannon is dark skinned and bisexual, and her scribe friend, Mairi, is deaf.
Violet annoyed me at the beginning, being a bit of a woe-is-me heroine. (Not that she doesn't have reason to be.) Luckily, she grows as the story progresses.
The minute we met Xaden I knew by his page long description that this was going to be one of those kinds of books. I only hoped the romance wouldn't take over the plot. (For the most part, it doesn't.) But Violet falls in love too fast and is borderline obsessed. She doesn't let up and it's a bit stalker-esk. If it hadn't been for this part (which wasn't actually that long) this would be a five star book. Because there are some truly fantastic moments, which I absolutely loved! Especially with the dragons!
The ending was very exciting. The last battle was mostly well done. (It got a bit long in the middle and my mind wandered.) Then it finished with Xaden's pov. (Which wasn't actually very good) and ends rather to be continued. Unfortunately, I'm still 17th in line at my library for the sequel…
