I LOVED this fast-paced thriller! This is a perfect summer thriller read, and I'd recommend this to anyone who loves YA thrillers, or is looking for a mystery entry-point read for the preteen in their life. There's definitely some intense themes of murder (blood but not too gruesome descriptions) and harmful secrets, but nothing sexual or inappropriate in that regard - I'd set the age range at 12 years and up.
The main character Kaylani is 12 and I loved how she is brave and honest, and motivated to help her dad who was recently sent to prison. She is an aspiring lawyer, and has an observational mindset, and those characteristics were really entertaining for a young sleuth character. Her relationship with her dad is heartwarming, I really loved how he inspired her and how Kaylani always remembered his motto to keep it 100% and be yourself.
My heart aches for the kids on the island, and I really liked getting to know the side characters, especially Chadwick and Miles. The setting was really well described and I liked learning the history of Martha's Vineyard, too. I loved reading the authors note about when she visited MV for research while pregnant, and approached writing this novel from that perspective. Can't wait to read more by Tiffany D Jackson, and I hope she writes more young reader books!!
