A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

5.0

This book is mesmerizing in the way all timeless fantasies should be <3 <3 <3. The world(s) and characters are deep, rich, and ALIVE! To say that V.E. Schwab's writing is marvelous and intoxicating seems like a moot point; she can do no wrong, I would literally have to begin EVERY review of her works this way. She is the master of dropping the audience into a world, and revealing its mechanics, conflicts, and heart-pounding cast, bit by bit, layer by layer, like the folds of an origami fortune-teller. The reader is rewarded for reading between the lines, or noticing seemingly innocuous details early on which come back later. And the descriptions of our misfits traversing the four Londons is SO vivid - a cross between The Magicians and Avatar The Last Airbender/Legend of Korra - that it is a CRIME that we are all still waiting for the adaptation of this book!

I cannot wait to see how the rest of the trilogy unfolds <3 <3 <3.
