This novel felt uneven to me, most of the time the writing was lyrical, sometimes it read more like a bodice-ripper. I learned more about the Korean experience with Japanese occupation and the racial discrimination Koreans experienced in Japan throughout the pre- and post-World War II Era. It's worth a read just for that.
