Dead Girl by Kerrie Faye

5.0

I don't read back of books before diving into a novel, so this one caught me entirely off-guard. In my first sitting, I got about fifty pages in and told my sister that "Dead Girl" is a contemporary book following a bullied girl named Ember who is diagnosed with synesthesia. Boy, I couldn't have been more wrong. "Dead Girl" in actuality is an urban fantasy following a girl named Ember who after narrowly dying realizes that she has unique powers. Ember uses these powers to get back at all those who have wronged her in the past, but of course there's much more to the story than that. . .

I was completely taken off guard when this ended up being a full-fledged fantasy novel involving secret assassins, angels and demons, and supernatural powers. Luckily, I am a fantasy nut and this couldn't have been a more lovely surprise. The magical system that Faye has invented in the "Dead Girl" world is quite intriguing and I can't wait to learn about it in the next installment.

Another thing I really enjoyed about this one is the characters. I loved Erick from the moment that he was introduced. I mean, he calls Ember warrior princess, which is so cute! He is also a chess nut, a member of the business club, and overall the best type of nerd. Hallee was a great addition to the duo, and rounded out the group so it was a trio. One of my other favorite characters is Derek, who is one of the love interests in the book. I usually hate the savior trope with a burning passion, but I came to appreciate Derek's character and let it slide.

One thing I was conflicted on in this book is the fact that there are like four possible love interests, one in which I absolutely despised from the beginning. There's Erick, the childhood best friend (that Ember has no interest in), Derek, the cute college student, Logan, the hot new guy in town, and Adam, the sexy entity that shows up in her dreams. I absolutely dislike Logan, so I was rooting for him to lose the entire time. I came to really like Derek, so I hope that he wins in the long run, but I guess we'll see.

Overall, I think what sold me on this book the most is how unique it is. At times, I wondered what I was reading and if it was truly going to go somewhere (this book most definitely suffers from book one disease), but I kept getting presented with such intriguing circumstances and unique things that I have never encountered in a book before, which kept me going. I read a ton of fantasy, but I've never encountered the angel and demon vibes that this book has in the past. I can't wait to dive deeper into this mystical version of Earth and to see where Ember's adventures take her in the next installments. I wasn't expecting this one to be a five star read, but I am hooked and need to know what happens next!
