Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch

4.0

Peter Grant has just completed his training as a London police officer, but his training didn’t prepare him for working with the supernatural. This is the first in Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London series, and apparently there was a lot of heavy lifting to do to set up the series. This book, Peter’s first case, is beyond complicated, and there are a gazillion characters, but the main half dozen people are engaging and the premise is great so I’m looking forward to book two.

I had the oddest experience reading this book. I’m sure— positive — I read at least the first two in this series not long after they came out, maybe even the first three. But after about thirty pages, I had zero memory of this story. Usually, even if I can’t remember the plot when I start a re-read, it will come back as I go along. Either I started and abandoned this book the first time I tried it, or my memory is way worse off than I realized, and I already know it’s pretty bad. I’m really curious to see if the second book is more familiar.
