Wake: The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts
by Rebecca Hall
challenging
emotional
informative
This, as expected given the content, was so hard to read. I had to take a break more than a couple times, especially at the images of all the slaves packed into a ship in chapter 7. Really, in each chapter after that, one thing or another just hit esp hard. And, of course, it was infuriating many times, especially the way Rebecca Hall was treated by the people she spoke to while trying to get access to the historical documents she needed for her research.
As infuriating and heartbreaking as it all was, I would absolutely recommend this book to someone wanting to learn more. It not so much taught me as made me realize how impossible it is to learn the history of the victims of slavery. And still, the bravery of the women who fought back against all odds is inspiring. And of Rebecca Hall's bravery and determination to find their stories.
