Ruthless Kings by Laura Lee

4.0

I’m still not sure how I feel about this series but book 2 is a 3.75, a step up from book 1 which I gave a 3.5 so I guess it’s getting better. The thing about me is when I’m invested.. I’m fully invested so I’d finish this series even if I hated it just to see it through. I don’t actually hate it I just can’t say I love it at all.

Book 2 picks up with Jazz in the hospital after the cliffhanger. The way that played out was off to me. I don’t mind a book where not everything is explained but good writing can still make you feel resolution. I get this is a 3 part series and the attack is part of the overall story but it seemingly just disappeared. The attack is the nucleus of the first few chapters then it’s not mentioned until the very end when she’s attacked again. The whole book seemed super slow which is a shift from Wicked Liars. In the first book, they were reaming into Jazz immediately and harshly. These kids took bullying the new girl to the extreme and it was constant. Book 2 made a shift so people were still douchey but they weren’t entirely intolerable. It makes sense with Jazz having her own thoughts about things being too good.

My biggest annoyance from book 2.. Did we really need an almost threesome to resolve the friend tension between Kingston and Bentley? There was no way else to work that out? It was clear Jazz liked them both from the beginning of book 1 but in the middle of a panic attack they decide hey let’s all get off together to calm her down.. wtf? It just seemed unnecessary. I love good spice, enjoy dark romance, even have loved some reverse harems but this seemed like it was just thrown in there and was pointless. There are a billion ways to resolve the beef between the boys when it was obvious Jazz and Kingston had some sort of deep connection or feelings for each other.

Irate this one higher than Wicked Liars because it was less irritating though still irritating. Off to book 3!
