I honestly didn’t know anything about this book when I picked it up. I only knew that it took place in the same world as her Shades of Magic series, and multiple years in the future. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out it was still following a lot of the characters from the original series. There were also several new characters to add fresh perspective and to shake things up.
I liked that we got to see even more of the world. We were able to explore new places and some places we only briefly saw in the original series. I definitely think you should read the original series before diving into this one. They mention the events of the past a lot, it’s also shaped who our characters have become since we’ve last seen them.
I will say that this story was a little bit slow plot wise. It was setting up a lot of things for the future books. There were still plenty of interesting things that happened, but there were also a lot of slower moments. I didn’t really mind because I love the characters so much.
Overall I love this series so much already. I definitely recommend if you enjoyed the original series.
