This book is one of those that’s an experience. Either you enjoy the experience, or you don’t. Either it makes you critically think or you simply think it’s trash. I don’t think either option is better than the other to be clear.
The first half of this book, as many pointed out in other reviews, is great. It’s very deliberate with its language, it’s very thought provoking. Also it feels very Hunger Games meets Squid Games? I know people have compared it to other books/media but I haven’t read those so this is how I thought of it.
The second half is where that experience part kicks in. Because honestly wtf was that? I didn’t.. enjoy it? But I feel like I understand the message that’s being sent? Maybe. Perhaps about how criminals have stories beyond their crimes, with their own trauma. Or how when society becomes too focused on “weeding out” it creates monsters of different kinds.
Either way I think it was a social commentary that can make you think, or that can make you wanna never read this author again.
