Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

3.0

Let me just start by saying I LOVED how fast this story was. I LOVED the action and adventure and yes, absolutely-the dragons! As someone who grew up with How to Train your Dragon as my favorite movie, The Hunger Games as one of my all-time favorite YA stories, and all the social media hype- I started this title with some pretty high expectations.

What I liked about this book: The characters. Violet. I can't say that about a lot of the main characters in Fantasy Romance. I love her flaws. I love how right from the beginning of the story you just FEEL for this character getting pushed into something they were not comfortable with; and yet, overtime they come to terms with themselves and their fear. The side characters were fairly loveable and, of course, the dragons. The system around the type of dragons I absolutely adored. I liked to see all the different types and their capabilities. The fact it portrayed them as vicious creatures really shined in this book. I appreciated the dark atmosphere and, for the most part kept me interested in what was going to happen next. I LOVE Andarna and I LOVE the different powers each of the dragons invest with the riders. It's so creative and the fact she got two dragons was the pinnacle of my excitement for this book. The emotions were a little lackluster in the romance department but boy it did a good job with retribution and the will to survive. I appreciate the feelings of guilt and fear as Violet and the others go through the different challenges. It even made be cry around the end with Liam. Liam D: I was quite upset about all that-the wet pages show.

What I didn't like: The characters. Violet was such a good character, what happened?! Why did common sense get replaced with lust and desire for a man that she barely knew? Maybe I just don't like the whole 'mated/fate pairs' because I had the same issue with ACOTAR. It just feels like another destined lovers rehash story but a little too forced. The whole mated pairs can't be separated just didn't resonate well with me. The romance had more of a YA vibe but it did have a few good spicy scenes. I appreciated Xaden's character but I felt his only personality was the fact he was powerful and beautiful and Violet couldn't get enough eye candy once she decided he was hers. The romance felt fast and honestly I feel bad for Dain throughout most of the book since it seemed he was doing the best he could to help but was overshadowed by the other characters willing to push Violet into the world of dragon riding. Honestly, if I was her, and I was forced into a pit of danger that I probably wouldn't survive I would have did anything to escape. But that's just me.

The fact that Violet wanted to attempt to be a rider anyway I appreciated- but I don't think I would fault Dain to try and keep her safe the best way he knew. Of course that whole last bit of a plot twist sends his character down an unknown road and I AM really curious how it will play out. My guess is Xaden and Violet will do this guilt trip dance throughout the chapters and be reminded by their dragons of their bond until they come to find each others love again at the end. That seems like a possible outcome in my opinion from what I've read thus far. I wish I got to know the side characters more aside from Liam D: and actually get into the characters backgrounds and make me feeling something for them. I also would like to get more details on the dragons, who they are, and the relationships between them.

At the end of reading this I decided to give it a 3.5 , going between a 3-4 and I know a lot of people really love this book so it's kind of controversial to say this, it's just not my favorite. I didn't find myself wanting to recommend this to anyone I talk to. I was disappointed with the romance and maybe the whole forced mates is just not my thing. It didn't feel natural and it felt really fast and unrealistic. BUT this is a fantasy world filled with dragons so, duh, it is supposed to be fictional. I think there are a lot of people who would really like this particular book. Especially the ones who loved ACOTAR. I would also say it's a good book for anyone who liked the Hunger Games too. As it's a bit of a mix. I still want to read the second book and see where it goes. I'm curious if we'll get more information on the dragons and what the whole deal was with the griffons if they were never enemies to start with.
