The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli
3.0

Reading this book took me back to my days in Intermediate School (5th and 6th Grade), curlwd up in a corner being enthralled with what drama the Wakefield sisters were going through in Sweet Valley Jr. High (Not high school bc I devoured those, senior year, and SVU as well). Actually, for the longest time I had been considering buying all the series but read this book has taught me that I have outgrown them.

The Upside of Unrequited is a coming of age story about a set of fraternal twins, Cassie and Molly, and their tumultuous experiences with first love and rejections. The story is told from Molly's point of view so as the reader, we pretty much find out things when she does.

My original thought when I started reading this was "My Goodness! Was I this insufferable at age 17?!" All the typical self doubting and self loathing was there, which at 17 is pretty normal, but it seemed double perhaps because she also had to add the fact that she was fat. The characters were perfectly created because each one was bold and I genuinely lind of cared about what was going on with them...they were just so dramatic.
I know, I know they are teenagers but jeez were we all really that bad as teens?

The story was cute, don't get me wrong. I think I just may have outgrown these stories, or it could just be the way this one was told. I do appreciate the fact that homosexuality in this story isn't like a major deal, it just is. Like, oh I am 5'6 brown hair, 2 moms...ya know regular everyday stuff. I did have one issue pertaining to Mina, but that gets rather spoilery so I shall keep it to myself.

This was my first book by Becky Albertalli. It wasn't bad, nor dissappointing, I just think it wasn't totally for me.
