Dopamine Detox: A Short Guide to Remove Distractions and Get Your Brain to Do Hard Things by Thibaut Meurisse

informative fast-paced

4.0

Lots of great, practical advice packed into a short read. The advice is basically that

  1. Over-stimulation is what prevents you being productive and it's best to avoid being stimulated so that you can focus on being productive
  2. Do a 45-minute focused productive session first thing in the morning
  3. Your mind will trick you that going back to work will be easy, that you can do it later, or that you should enjoy yourself now and worry about it later.
  4. Reset your dopamine levels doing a 48-, 24-hour or partial detox where you give up drugs/alcohol, sugar & processed foods, social media, movies, video games, internet, etc. Anything that is endless scroll or overly stimulating.
  5. Go for walks, journal, meditate, read, or stretch to boost “here-and-now” neurotransmitters (endorphin, oxytocin, serotonin) that make you feel calmer and more present (the opposite of dopamine)
  6. Plan your day. Prioritize tasks by thinking about long-term goals, reverse engineering those into short-term goals, and the tasks needed to achieve those goals.
  7. Schedule 1 major task to work on each morning
