The Catcher in the Rye
by J.D. Salinger
Once you realize that Holden is a child, it really changes how you look at this. He's immature and hates everything but I think that's most teenagers. He's also already running around, no supervision at 16, doing adult things because they were expected to act that way. The obsession with "phony" reminds me of the new "cringe" immaturity and holds weight for today's world. I felt for him despite his immaturity, sibling loss and a general lack of direction and hope in life--it's relatable to me when I was a teen.
