Below by Laurel Hightower

5.0

5 stars to Below, a fantastic creature feature by the lovely Laurel Hightower.

I love Laurels writing and this novella is no exception. It hit a lot of horror genres/tropes that I love: outdoor horror, survival, creature feature, lone woman protagonist that is layered and well done and a few surprises along the way.

Recently divorced, Addy is driving a long stretch of highway in West Virginia when she cautiously befriends a trucker who offers to let her follow him through a rough patch of road. It’s not long before things go off the rails. Addy has some tough decisions to make, while trying to survive something that seems to be hunting her as she descends into darkness.

This story was fast paced (I couldn’t put it down and read most of it in one sitting), unique and just the right amount of horror and suspense. It surprised me a few times and had me wishing for more.

I highly recommend this novella, it’s perfect for this time of year (especially if you live somewhere where snow is already showing up)! I will pick up anything Laurel writes and this just solidified that.
