What a sad, slow book. I wanted to love it, and there were pleasing elements to it, but it was so unrelentingly sad and slow. And then the ending! The ending! My 9 year-old daughter was thinking she loved the book and was going to recommend it to her 3rd grade teacher, but when we got to the end, she threw up her hands and said "no way." She's not recommending it now. She went off on this little monologue about how authors and editors need to understand that no one wants a let-down of an ending like that. For one hyped-up book, I feel it could have been better. Sweet in places and promising, but really drawn out, with what was, to us, a dissatisfying ending.
