The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate by Peter Wohlleben

4.0

Wohlleben's prose is charming and makes the trees' life utterly fascinating and enchanting. Very lovely. But it does make one despair...just when you thought you had safely reduced your carbon footprint and eliminated any harm to animals that you might have been causing through your diet, along comes Peter Wohlleben to let us know that trees, just like animals, are people too. And, just like animals, we are destroying their habitat...you see it turns out that trees in urban environments or in managed forests are markedly different creatures than trees in an undisturbed virgin forest. Humans are doing harm everywhere we turn. It is enough to make one sit down and weep and give up all hope of ever doing enough to mitigate the evil of our species existence. Treebeard would delight in Peter Wohlleben and would drink long draughts with him while talking endlessly about the growth of trees. I think they would have much in common.
