Compared to the first instalment of this series, virtually nothing happened in this book.
Plot/ Characters: I found the plot line to be lacking in this book. While the first of the series was more plot based, this book was definitely more character based. It read more like a day-to-day account of Rhea’s experiences in her new world while we got to know the boys better. There wasn’t a ton of action until the end, and while we did get a bit more info on the war and start to understand the school better, I didn’t think there was a ton of world building to make up for the lack of plot. I’m not completely complaining. I felt like I connected with the characters much better in this book than the last. We really get to know the Elites and get more chapters from their POV.
One thing I did take issue with, was Zellus’ role. This is clearly a character designed for us to dislike, and that mission is definitely accomplished. What I didn’t quite buy though is how much he is allowed to get away with. The members of the Hex, Zeus in particular, are supposed to be the very top of the top. They are the most powerful and those you are not to mess with. Yet Zellus is able to publicly embarrass them and spill secrets to the masses with no consequences. I’m not sure why, as a non-elite, the Dean of the school would be award such authority and be allowed to act the way he does.
Writing: Aside from feeling like this book was much slower, the writing itself has enjoyed. It’s easy to follow, flows well and feels immersive as you read. There are a ton of steamy, open-door scene and I loved the cliffhanger ending! I’m not quite sure yet if I’m committed to continuing on though. I would still recent this series to those who enjoy things like Zodiac Academy.
