Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody

3.0

This was a decent attempt at a debut novel. The writing is exceptional, the main character voice sticks with you and it's very consistent, perhaps one of the best character arcs I have ever encountered in new YA. I will definitely pick up another book by Amanda Foody in the future.

However, the storyline was predictable and the ending was also easy to guess. In all honesty, I did guess what was going on the way early in the story, ever since I realized that the heroine can create illusions which is basically the first chapter, so yea, tension and eventful plotline aren't the assets of this book.

The premise was highly interesting, yes, but the idea of having so many characters acting and talking at the same time was...stagnant? Flat? I'm torn a bit about the depiction of those characters as well as the male romance's backstory and arc too.

This book was okay. It was fun to listen to but the Audible narrator clearly missed the mark for me with the many different accents she tried to pull off. I hope that my next Foody reads will be as exciting as they sound though.
