The Epic of Gilgamesh
by Unknown
This is my first time reading a non-Greek/Roman epic and I enjoyed it a lot! Unlike the epics that I'm used to, Gilgamesh is written in a repetitious and lyrical style that allows the reader to imagine someone memorizing the entire story and even sing it. This style also makes it a quicker read.
The stories focus on the concepts of civilization, nature, friendship, and death - all things that we see come up in stories across cultures - is beautiful to see in a story from a culture I am not as familiar with. It's also interesting to see the differences in cultural practices and values that are expressed in this story that are different from those seen in Hellenic and Latin stories.
A fascinating section of the story was the tale of Uta-nashipti which was so similar to the Abrahamic story of Noah. This, and the story of the Great Flood as it shows up in myths across the globe, is always very cool to read about and makes me feel like I should do more research into the subject.
