The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon

challenging dark emotional inspiring sad tense medium-paced

5.0

This is for all the readers who want some historical-fiction that ISN’T set in World War II. THE FROZEN RIVER is inspired by the diaries and life of Martha Ballard, a midwife living in Maine in the late 1700’s. And it is SOO GOOD! The Author’s Note is a must-read, but only after you’ve read the book.⁣

THE FROZEN RIVER held my interest from beginning to end. The murder, the scandal, the relationships, the 🔪😳🫣😧 end… absolutely was here for it all. I was fully invested in all the characters weaving stories, and there are lots of them. The absolute hypocrisy and double-standard on women at this time was infuriating (let’s pretend it’s better now 😒). The writing was beautiful, the story telling masterful. This was my first Ariel Lawson book, but won’t be my last!⁣

“Memory is a wicked thing that warps and twists. But paper and ink receive the truth without emotion, and they read it back without partiality. That, I believe, is why so few women are taught to read and write. God only knows what they would do with the power of pen and ink at their disposal.”⁣

🎧 I did the audio and clearly loved it. I have no doubt that reading the physical book is just as good, but the audio was excellent. There is a whole town of people, so maybe with the physical you’ll have an easier time keeping them all straight. I let context clues help me out with characters I couldn’t remember and did just fine.
