When I first started this book I didn't know it was based on a Hermione/Draco fanfic. But then I've never been good at catching fanfic inspirations. As well, I found it overly dramatic and very silly and almost gave up before 20%.

However, I kept going to give the characters and world a chance (this is a debut, after all). I was surprised by the depth of magical-medical lingo and explanation given to the various Orders and general use of magic, or seith.

I really enjoyed how much this was a TRUE enemies to lovers. These two aren't fated, or one secretly pining, they are truly diametrically opposed and vocally can't stand the other. But then they find common cause, and something likable in the other, some attraction sparks...and wow, what a truly slow burn.

There is a smidge of spice, maybe a 1.5/5, but this is a long slow build-up of emotions from two stubborn and talented people. It nearly ends on a cliffhanger and I am eager for book 2 and so glad it's only a duology!

This is an alternate England, but the names are either 9th century (Mercia) or entirely new.
