I'm never going to stop being amazed that i got sent an ARC of a Disney book. BUT, this is not your typical Disney story! There's not a princess, singing teapot or friendly chameleon in sight!
Oh. My. Word. Every so often I genuinely have no idea what to write in a review, because I don't want to give spoilers, and "it's really good" just isn't a review.
I don't think I would have liked any of the characters if I met them in real life. Whilst I can recognise that Annie was a product of her upbringing, but she just wouldn't be my type of person. And yet, I found myself drawn to her. Her story is, tragically, the story of countless real life girls. And Codie has given them a voice.
I loved the varied, and slightly bonkers new friends that Annie made. Especially the twins. Hunt and Howl. They made me laugh. And the language they all used. I spent half my time wondering what they actually meant. All of which added perfectly to the spooky, not quite sure what's happening, atmosphere of the book.
I have to say though, reading this on a bright summer day felt wrong though. It needs to be read in the dark, in autumn, in a graveyard if you dare!
I'm absolutely astounded that this is a debut novel. It was absolutely flawless and I'm desperate to read more by Codie. Maybe the backstory of some of the other characters? Please?
