The Burning Girls

overall a good book, and one i would recommend! def more thriller than horror for me, not sure if i was “scared” or “grossed out” once. it felt more like a mystery to me than anything. i really appreciated how all the characters connected and had their own relationships/history with each other! this wasn’t an ensemble, but sometimes felt like it! however sometimes it was a bit overwhelming to keep track of everyone, and this is coming from someone who reads Game of Thrones.
i really enjoyed the way Tudor ended each chapter, with a cliffhanger! i always was engaged and wanted to read more, and would get so excited when i realized i was nearing the end of the chapter.
now my complaints. the narrator was heinously annoying. like my God, I don’t think I’ve ever read from a more judgmental person! same with her daughter. their attitude and personality was so atrocious i was almost rooting against them! it felt as though the author was bullied as a child and was now taking it out on her characters. there’s nothing i hate more then the mean girl trope, and this book ran with it.
i kept thinking we would have flashbacks to the 1500s or that there would be a mystery surrounding that, which is what really drew me to the book in the first place. i was thinking The Witch (movie) vibes and did not get that unfortunately.
additionally, i guessed the plot twist about 30% in. this is to no fault of the author, however it was so glaringly obvious i wonder how anyone could be shocked.
if it weren’t for the lack of shock towards the end and the annoying characters, this would have probably been a 5.
