One of the Good Ones by Maritza Moulite, Maika Moulite
5.0

I knew going into this that something unexpected was going to happen. And I was still caught by surprise.

At first I was a little annoyed at having and Shaqiria's Evelyn's perspectives. I loved the dynamic of Kezi and Happy talking about either side of this monumental moment. Interrupting it with these strange historical anecdotes just felt off to me. But, dear reader, I would very soon eat my words. Because the plot, seemingly centered on this one family, blew up.

One particular scene felt like an absolute punch to the gut. If you know me, you probably know exactly which scene that was (no spoilers here, friends). I had to pause and just sit with that for a moment. As Jenny and Happy and their parents address their views of Kezi and ever so slowly uncover the real Kezi through her road trip plans, through following the green book, through historical anecdotes and continuing her YouTube channel... It really brings home how little you know a person.

Also damn that authors' note hit hard. The very concept of what being "one of the good ones" means, about the effect of racism on generations of Black families, about sundown towns and patronizing smiles.

TL;DR read this book
