The Companion by E.E. Ottoman
3.0

This is a polyamorous t4t romance that is a surprising mix of sweet and spicy.

This was my second read of the Trans Rights Readathon 2024!

Madeline, a trans woman, moves away from the 1940s New York City literary scene and moves in with a trans man named Victor. She begins to write the stories she wants to tell instead of the ones she expects will sell as romance blossoms between Victor and another trans woman, Audrey.

I liked the idea this novella, but ultimately the story fell short for me. Madeline cooks, puts on clothes, visits Audrey, spends time with Victor, and writes. That's all she does for all 160 pages. The result is a story that feels repetitive. I see the author's vision with the characters and development of the relationship, but it didn't feel effective and I found myself bored. Even the sex felt repetitive until the final scene.

Still, this story felt hopeful in the sense of finding a place of safety and finding happiness in a casual existence with the people you care about. I'd love to read more from this author, because I think this one was just a miss for me.
