The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix

3.0

First things first, Grady Hendrix is a great author and a compelling storyteller. Even if this book didn't live up to all the hopes and dreams I had for it, I read it in one day so obviously Hendrix is doing something right!

I think my issue going into this book is that I expected the Final Girl Support group to be a little more supportive. From the very beginning it was obvious tensions were high and I never really got a sense of family from the girls that Hendrix wanted to portray them as. We are expected to believe that these five or six girls had spent 16 years together, but the proof wasn't in the pudding for me.

Lynnette was the odd one out, vigilant in trying to stay anonymous and undetected to an unhealthy degree so perhaps it was because of this the rest of the girls felt closed off and distant for most of the novel. Either way, I was expecting a badass girl gang team up and that's not really what I got for most of the book.

Lynnette as a main character was infuriating at times, she was uncooperative and stubborn and made a lot of things harder on herself than I think she had to. But she was well written. Her character was consistent and grew, and even though she pissed me off, she wasn't a bad character. It was interesting to see through the eyes of a girl who couldn't trust anybody, that kind of trauma affects everybody in different ways.

I would have liked to know more about Chrissy. I feel like I was very confused with the man she was living with, what troubles she's gone through, how her downfall came to be. She deserved a little more backstory. So did Heather tbh, I still feel like I don't really know what happened to her.
