Cornelia Funke has the most beautiful and fascinating imagination, and is a wonderful writer for children. Her imagination is so broad that she writes long works, so not so very suitable for young primary - but, with the possible exception of Inkdeath, her work sings to anyone old enough to read with fluency. She doesn't shy away from frightening themes in this series, which makes it not for the fainthearted, but the resolution of the situations are as vivid and comforting as the wonderful plots.
These books are as transporting as anything I have read in children's fiction, and stand alone not just for the amazing plotlines, but also for the brilliant writing style.
