Things My Son Needs to Know about the World by Fredrik Backman

5.0

“Wite-Out is really, really, really hard to get off a two-year old.”

There’s not a lot that’s explicitly remarkable about this book. In many ways, it’s exactly what the cover makes you think it is: a sappy, sarcastic, lovely ode to fatherhood.

What makes it special is that Backman takes a vanilla idea for a short piece of nonfiction and writes it with such jovial gratitude and sudden emotion that you forget about how you’re effectively reading a stranger’s journal.

I’ve read a handful of Backman’s books, and this one doesn’t break the mold and rival any of his fiction work. But I’m exceedingly glad he shared it with us, and envision myself frequently revisiting its gentle sincerity and infectious personality.
