Okay, so i was so excited to read this book but it just kept not hitting my expectations? It wasn't awful, well parts of it were, but it was just flat.

first, the plot aggravated me at several points. I didn't like the whole attempt to break up a couple just so you can date him. And, when the boy you like won't date you, I did not get the going out with the bland boy instead. just don't date anyone, Tessa? I mean, it's not that hard to be single. That's where I've been most of my life so it was confusing to me why Tessa went out with the other dude because the nice guy wouldn't date her.

and then, it did feel like the author was like, let's list all the social issues and tropes I get annoyed with and tick them off one by one. From the best friend who is treated like she doesn't matter to the mean girl in the circle of entitled friends. It just kind of getting hammered over and over again, while Tessa herself is just being very annoying throughout the book.

so, overall, I really did want to enjoy this book for a romance featuring a Black teenager and her writing. But it just didn't land completely well for me.
