“War was not won by a single battle, but rather the collection of strategic moves made. A battle here, a battle there. In the end there would be one winner... This wouldn’t be a battle to be won, but a battle to survive.”

Damn, Nelle did it again! She took Rising, a book combining everything you love about the sci-fi/fantasy/adventure genres into a single world, and leveled up by throwing in twists on top of twists, jaw-dropping shockers, spicy spice, and prepping for war. (As a polemology junkie, that made me super happy.)

When we left our Band of Misfits at the end of book 1, Rising, they were reeling from a shocking reveal, which rocked their foundation. Betrayal of this extreme DEMANDS to be felt, so our cast of characters are fracturing at the seams. However, war is coming and they must figure out a plan of attack to ensure the survival of the Monterey Compound and civilization itself. This book took me on a JOURNEY! It’s fast-paced, full of drama, a dash of spicy spice, an epic battle, and SO. MUCH. CHARACTER. DEVELOPMENT! Truthfully, there isn’t enough space for me to rave about this book, so I will leave you with this: if you liked the morality & war commentary from the Hunger Games series, enjoyed The Last of Us, and were intrigued by the science from the Divergent series… then this world is for you!

But as I’ve learned, her writing is so much more than a few crazy moments. When we left our characters in Rising, they were far from home and were dealt a couple of massive blows to their familial foundation. So Nelle spends a big chunk of this book picking up right where we left off and showing how our characters deal with their hurt and trust issues.

However, war doesn’t care if you’re trying to mend a broken heart… it’s coming. And it’s ruthless. Yes, people die in this book too. And yes, it’s devastating. But that’s the cost of war.

The writing in this book is smart, entertaining, emotional, dark, funny, violent, purposeful, and full of heart. If you haven’t read Rising or the Rising: Origin Stories, PLEASE do so, because you have to dive into this world.
