The Law of Moses
by Amy Harmon
That feeling when you read a book. Palms were sweating. Heart was racing. Goosebumps. I got it when I read The Kite Runner. I got it when I read Life of Pi. I got when I read The Hunger Games. That feeling when you just know this would be an amazing film.
Moses is a prophet. Actually, Amy Harmon is the prophet. Her lyrical, poetic storytelling had me spell bound. What a gift of a book.
I sobbed so hard, my family thought something was wrong with me. There wasn't, I was just so caught up in Moses and his visions that the world around me ceased to exist. Moses Wright is the Bruce Willis of 6th Sense. My heart hurt for him and the evil prejudice that small minded people treated him with. Georgia Shepherd sees beyond the crack and falls for the beautiful man that he is.
I have read lots of books this year and right now as the year draws to a close I found a perfect gem.
"I'm a very ordinary girl Moses. I know that I am. And I always will be. I can't paint. I don't know who Vermeer is, or Manet for that matter. But if you think ordinary can be beautiful, that gives me hope. And maybe sometime you'll think about me when you need an escape from the hurt in your head."
"If I were to paint you, I would use every colour......You would have Crimson lips and peach skin and ebony eyes with purple shadows. You would have hair streaked with gold and white and blue and skin tinted caramel and cream, swirled with pink and shaded with cinnamon."
"But there are laws. There are rules. Laws of nature and laws of life. Laws of love and laws of death. And when you break them, there are consequences. And Moses and I like a stream of fateful lovers who had gone before us and who would come after us, were subject to those laws, whether we kept them or not."
"If you don't love, then nobody gets hurt. It's easy to leave. It's easy to lose. It's easy to let go."
"When we dream we don't know we dream. In our dreams our bodies are solid, we touch, we kiss, we run, we feel. Our thoughts some how create reality."
"A story of before and after, of new beginnings and never-endings. A story flawed and fractured, crazy and cracked, and most of all, a love story. Our story."
Oh dear, I'm crying again.
