The House of Hades by Rick Riordan

4.0

The House of Hades star breakdown & thoughts:
1. +2 stars for Jason Grace and Piper McLean's character development. I loved the fact that Piper got to kill some monsters and stand as her own character, because she spent The Lost Hero to The Mark of Athena being a satellite love interest for Jason Grace. Speaking of Jason, he surprisingly also developed slightly visible character traits since MoA.
2. +1 star for Frank Zhang/Hazel Levesque romance. Even though I mostly hate the romance in this series, the fact that they were their own characters while remaining in a relationship pleased me immensely. Bonus 0.5 points for quitting the Frank-Hazel-Leo love triangle.
3. -1 star for Percabeth. I hate that they went from amazing characters with compelling personalities to idiots who can't think of anything except each other. Annabeth's been annoying me since The Lost Hero, but Percy went from one of my favorite characters to a hormonal cardboard who wants to settle down with his first girlfriend.
4. -1 for
Spoilerthe Tartarus subplot. The gods, demigods, Grover, and Nico talked about it as if it were Hell, and the way they said it was actually scary. In HoH, however, the only time Tartarus felt real was when Percy tortured Akhlys. Mostly it was "Cute Percabeth Moments Playground".

UPDATE(2/7/19): I've decided to upgrade my rating to 3.5 stars so this doesn't have the same rating as The Mark of Athena (actually The Mark of Athena, But There's Actually More Percabeth And Jasper Angst And A Love Triangle Than Anything About The Athena Parthenos, but whatever).
