The Beauty and the Beast by Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve

3.0

I can't believe I called myself a Beauty and the Beast fan without ever reading the original story! All of those retellings make so much sense now.

I was originally drawn to this book because of the beautiful designs by MinaLima. However, I felt that the majority of the pop-ups were extremely wasteful. I would've preferred more of their stunning illustrations peppered throughout the pages.

The downfall of this story for me was it being in Old English; it took me much longer to read and often left me confused. So confused that I think I misinterpreted a major element of the story which resulted in me skimming the final two chapters. The importance of social hierarchy and incestuous relationships definitely deterred me from this version leaving me to prefer the classic Disney adaption.

Will this book remain on my shelf? Yes, it's stunning. Will I try reading this story again? Maybe, someday. Can I give this more than 3.5 stars? No, not at this time.
