Once More with Feeling by Elissa Sussman

this book was honestly exactly what i expected it to be; a cutesy guilty pleasure romance. i have not read a broadway show based romance before, and it was a really interesting setting and background for the story to take place in! everything starting at theatre camp did make me chuckle too. it is also so fascinating to see how authors handle writing a story around a production/music/art that is completely and wholly fictional, but i think this one did a pretty good job with the musical and music careers of the main characters. it was easy to follow and pretty interesting. (i would definitely see riveters! haha)

that being said, were there a lot of tropes and predictable parts? yes

did i absolutely eat it up anyway? also yes

kathleen was not my favorite romance novel lead i’ve ever read, but i did have a lot of empathy for her and her experience even if her anger got to be a bit much for me. if i were her i would hold grudges too tbh. i did really enjoy the fact that all the characters felt like they had a fair amount of depth and that all their relationships with each other felt pretty natural. i thought the exploration of harriet and kathleen’s friendship was really cool; it presented interesting ideas about how relationships flex and change over time and circumstance. the same could be said for kathleen and cal’s relationship. i think reading about all the changes they went through and about them having such a history with each other was really different and ended up being one of my favorite parts. (i love lore)
