A Good Marriage by Kimberly McCreight

Spoilers Alert

I was very excited for this book. As a married woman, dramas around marriages I typically enjoy - and don't get me wrong this was a fun read. However, this reminded me of Season 3 of AHS - aliens showing up in the middle of an insane asylum. The main story was so good! But then there was added details about Amanda's sanity, and lying about the death of her father and Carolyn. Instead of enriching the story, these details muddied the actual twists and turns. The character Zach was underdeveloped because so much energy was spent on adding these minute, unimportant details. The story of the marriage between Lizzie and her husband Sam was underdeveloped as well. Why did the author bring Sam into the murder at all?? His sordid passed and subsequent issues were enough to see the cracks in the marriage. Lastly, I was a bit shocked to read that the author was a mother because of the way Lizzie's struggles with wanting/having children and the storyline with Case was left completely open ended.

I wanted to like this book, and I think I would have if there wasn't such a focus on trying to shock the reader. The root was a great story, and the characters were intriguing. I wished so much more from this book.
