Kill Switch
by Penelope Douglas
KILL SWITCH is the third book in the Devil’s Night series. Read my reviews of Corrupt and Hideaway.
I knew KILL SWITCH would be the most emotional book of the series for me, and I was right. Because of Damon’s past abuse and the statutory rape charge hovering over him and Winter, there was so much to unpack and I was both curious and terrified!
Damon was definitely the star of this book. In fact, Damon IS this book. Unlike the previous installments, none of the character could the spotlight from him. Everything I enjoyed about Kill Switch revolves around him and his healing journey. Diving into his trauma wasn’t easy, and there were moments I literally needed to set the book down and breathe, but being in his head is the only way to truly understand Damon and all his complexity. I was always intrigued by him, but now I love him to pieces! There are so many layers to this man that go beyond the tough exterior he shows the world. Beneath all his rage, there is a world of pain and such a strong need for connection. I rooted for his happiness the whole way through!
Which brings us to Winter. Hers was the perfect personality to complement the mess that is Damon Torrance. She is sweet and naïve, the breath of fresh air he needs with all the messed up things he’s had to endure. Overall, I really enjoyed her. When I initially found out she was blind, my heart was breaking, but boy did this girl give me a wakeup call. While I can’t speak for the accuracy of the representation, I can say that I felt empowered by Winter’s strong sense of independence and her positive outlook. Also, the sensory descriptions were beautiful! There were moments, however, when her youth grated on my nerves, which didn’t make me love her as much as I did Banks or the new and improved Rika.
Between the past and present storylines, I definitely preferred the past. Those chapters revealed such a soft side to Damon’s character, and I loved seeing how everything started for them. There was so much curiosity and sweetness and heartbreak! Also, the car scene was IT for me. If you know, you know. Instead, in the present chapters I felt the romance was going in circles, and I didn’t feel the connection between Damon and Winter until the last 30% of the book. More than the romance, in the present I was gobbling up Damon’s interactions with the other horsemen, especially Rika and Will. In the previous books we do get a sense of how close Will and Damon are, but in Kill Switch the depth of that bond hit me like a sucker punch! There’s a scene toward the end between them that became my favorite of the series as a whole. I wish so badly that we’d gotten to see more of them together! As for Rika, I’ve accepted the fact that she’s a constant in this series, but for once I was glad for it! The girl found some spine between Hideaway and Kill Switch and the dynamic with Damon was electric!
In perfect Penelope Douglas fashion, the last 30% of this book was a rollercoaster. It was filled with action, super hot and my mind is still reeling from the reveals! I’m so eager to see how things will play out going forward!
