I adored the heart of this novel: the world, the characters, and the themes. Ellie is an intelligent and strong main character, one who is easy to love from the very beginning. I loved the paranormal elements, especially when they took roots in Ellie’s Lipan Apache background. The big plot twist had me feeling for a few minutes, and I love when a book manages to do that to me! I also loved the commentary/stories shared between native characters about both their history and their place in the world present day.
For some, romance is an essential part of any story they read. If that’s the case for you, this book may not be your cup of tea. Ellie was confirmed by the author to be asexual, so plot and solving the main mystery takes the focus of this book.
In the end, I felt this was a captivating paranormal thriller/mystery!
