The Terror
by Dan Simmons
This book is an exceptionally well researched and detailed piece of historical fiction, marred by the fact that the author cannot write a compelling female character. This isn't a problem for most of the narrative, which focuses on a sausage fest of varyingly awful British men destined to die a cold and painful death (chef's kiss), but really becomes an issue in the novel's last 100 pages where a truly bizarre love story unfolds. (I actually gagged at Silence's line "I was always waiting for you.") As a fan of both horror and polar exploration, this was quite a disappointment.
