Goodbye Days
by Jeff Zentner
I had high expectations of this book after the heart wrenching ride of the Serpent King. I wanted to invest myself completely in this new story and whatever heartbreak was coming, and to a certain extent, I did. The first two goodbye days were brutal and I cried my eyes out. But maybe it's the way Jeff writes the most horrible adults ever, or the trying-too-hard quirkiness of the main character, but there were lots of scenes where I felt I was supposed to connect and didn't. Stuff that was supposed to be hilarious and gut wrenching wasn't. The writing got super poetic at random points that didn't flow with the rest of the story. There was good here too though, like Carver's sister Georgia, and his relationship with Jesmyn. Maybe I'll feel differently after a day or two (the Serpent King took a while to sink in) but this one just sadly wasn't my favourite.
