The Darkest Assassin by Gena Showalter

3.0

from the 1001 dark nights novellas.

fox is a gatekeeper assassin, newly possessed by the demon distrust. unable to control her demon, she unintentionally kills 12 sent ones. bjorn is an elite sent one commanded to execute her for her crimes. he is unable to carry out her sentence and imprisons her instead. meanwhile the wife who forced him to bond with her continues to drain his life force and she tries to help.

-3 stars. i hate that this '1001 dark nights' publishing company keeps luring in authors i like to write short novellas rather than full length novels. there's not enough story and they all feel rushed and romantic insta-love cheesy. it wasn't a bad story, and the smut was good, it was just too short for my tastes. too much of a rush to that happy ending. but i love the REST of the 'lords of the underworld' series, and if i don't read this one in the series i'll miss out on things that will be referenced in future novels. so, pbbbft. frustrated and considering 2 stars for that frustration. all the more so because i just looked and the next book to come out will ALSO be a stupid novella for 1001 dark nights.

"don't take this the wrong way, but are you sure you know how to fight? hint. there are myriad ways, but standing there, doing nothing isn't one of them."

"let's be real. you don't want to lock me away for my crimes. you want to lock me away because you blame me for your desire. you're lashing out, because i dared to turn you on, as if females aren't blamed for a male's actions and reactions all the time. tell me bjorn. which of these scenarios works best for you? i pretend not to notice your arousal... and you consider me prudish. i point out that you obviously like the look of me... but i'm conceited. how about i explain to you how you can't possibly want me... so you can ding me for being insecure? if ever you compliment me, should i accept it and come across as needy, or reject it like a baby-back-bitch? there is no winning with you or anyone."

"you're only an hour late."
"we're five minutes late." "no. if you're not ten minutes early, you're five minutes late. but if you're more than a minute late, you're an hour late. the math checks."
